To find medical evidence that supports the idea many researches were made. It was started in Karolinska Institute in Sweden where doctor Torkel made some analysis of children having attention disorder in 1999. He wanted to find out if memory cultivation can be useful for rapt attention, concentration and improving learning achievements. The results were incredible: children not only significantly improved their own learning results; sometimes they outweighed the results of “normal” children. The memory cultivation method created by doctor T. Klingberg helps to cultivate working memory. In 2005 the method was started to use in America, later in all over the world. Doctor T. Klingberg made the analysis made in 2002 which shows that “Cogmed” system is useful for all the people to achieve life goals.
In 2009, professor of York University S. Gathercole made the research to explore if pupils’ improved their learning results after using “Cogmed” memory cultivation method.
There were 42 randomly chosen pupils 8- 11 years old from six English schools, divided into two groups who participated in the research. For one group the training were very intensive, for the other of medium – intensive level, also the second group was the control group.
The “Cogmed” memory cultivation method is used for training, which continues for 6 – 7 weeks and is arranged of 20 sessions (35 minutes each).
The working memory of pupils is evaluated, as well as the inborn intelligence, mathematics, reading before the training and after the, in case to be able to evaluate the change that has been made.
The group which were trained more intensively achieved better goals, significantly improved their verbal, visual and working memory. According to the research results, pupils that were not trained so intensively didn’t achieve these goals in none of these spheres, 68% from the high level and 25% from medium – intensive level achieved the normative level. The same results were recognized when listening tasks were evaluated. The improvement is reduced to the starting – point during the period of 6 months. However, the improvement is not recognized when evaluating inborn intelligence, even working memory is closely connected to the intelligence and mathematics.
Every 4th or 5th of 30 pupils in one class, child tend to have short working memory. The research proves that intensive training helps to achieve better learning results.
BOAMT and RAVEN IQ tests
Dr. Arthur‘as Lavin‘as, dr. Barbara Ingersill, dr. Helena Westerberg and other scientists made more research to prove the benefits of memory cultivation. One Michigan University professor explores if memory cultivation can improve the inborn intelligence. It is common to think that inborn intelligence is inherited and one cannot improve while learning. However, the research proved that the method works and one can improve his/her inborn intelligence.
70 students from University of Bern, Switzerland (25 years old) were randomly chosen for the research. They were divided into two groups: one group participated in memory cultivation training and another not. Participants had trainings for 8, 12, 17 and 1 days. Students’ intelligence level was tested before and after the training, also how long it took to do the BOMAT and RAVEN intelligence tests. The main principle of these tests is to supply the missing part of composition with some presented.
The training was divided into 4 sessions: each consists of 20 block and 20 topics and lasts 20 minutes.
According to the results, participants of all the four groups increased their working memory during the training period.
Those IQ tests are closely related to memory cultivation training method.
The same IQ tests were given to both groups. According to the results the group that participated in the training improved their IQ level. Moreover, those who attended training for the longest period, which means for 19 days achieved the best results.
The research proved that intensive memory cultivation improves IQ level and working memory.
Mind is usually related to the inborn intelligence, while intellect is supposed to mean the capacity to use all your skill and knowledge. High IQ is perfect starting – point to become reasonable and intelligent human being, but it also requires acquired knowledge and experience. Hence, memory cultivation can improve the inborn intelligence and help to become reasonable and bright person.
The need of memory cultivation in Lithuania
European Social Entrepreneurship and Innovative Studies Institute made the research “What pupils think how much time they have to spend doing their homework?” The results of the analysis showed that pupils’ opinion about the period of time needed for studying is totally different from the real time required to learn the study material. According to the results only 12, 6 % of 9 – 10th grade pupils and 35, 7% of senior year students spend more than 3 hours doing their homework. However, 50% of them think that they should do their home tasks for more than 4 hours. In general, 60 % of pupils said that they have more than 10 working hours per day, because are they have too many home tasks. People that have medium – term memory can remember the information for 24 – 48 hours (students tend to have this type of memory; you can try to ask student about the exam he got 10 points after 3 days) Also you can check it by asking sick people what did he/she eat yesterday for dinner.
To transfer information to medium-term memory, longer reverberation (2 – 12 minutes) of electric impulse is required (try to read the sentence 17 times in a row…)
During the process biochemical reactions appear: synapses new albuminous macromolecules and neuron specific protein are synthesized. During the experiment some “memory peptides” that affects ionic conduction of membranes were recognized. This period is called consolidation stage, in other words, passing from medium – term memory to long – term memory (people remember things for more thab 24 – 48 hours).
Docent dr. Vilija Gincevičienė and dr. Danutė Milevičienė made the research in S. Nėries gymnasium, there strict schooling methods and high education standards are applied and propagated. They recognized that pupils have more tasks then they can handle, in this case many of them do not do their homework at all. There all the troubles start.
